Animations for ”flight of the giraffa”, a side scrolling space shooter that we are working on.
This week I have been working on animating death animations for the enemies in our game. This week I have been working on animating the death animations for enemy 1, enemy 2, enemy 3 and a death animation for our mini boss at the end of our mid game level.

At the moment we are about a week away from where we are supposed to be finished with our Alpha of the game.
This is our game as it is being developed right now before any sort of play testing has been done, further tweaking will probably be necessary.
At this point the player and the enemies will only have one life, which means one hit and the player dies and have to restart the level. Same goes for our enemies.
As i mentioned we may have to tweak some of these things once we play tested the game, but for now this is what we are working from.

An introduction to the enemies and the task.

We are focusing on a ”bullet hell” type of game. Since our game is relatively simple we will focus on the difficulty and visuals of our game, since we feel that most novel ideas has already been done in the space shooter concept (right or wrong).
Our enemies will only have one hit point as mentioned and so we will have to introduce them in greater numbers, making the death animation important from an aesthetic point of view since it will be repeated to the the player numerous times during the game play.

The  death animation for our enemy nr 1 in our game ”Flight of the Giraffa”.
It is a 6 frame animation with the enemy vessel exploding and fragmenting into smaller pieces. I have been using the timeline tool in photoshop cc to animate the frames needed for the animation.
The frames were compiled into a ”sprite sheet” using a program called ”glueit” which allows us to get all the frames into a single Png format as seen below for the programmers to insert into the game.
As mentioned, the animation will be used when the player hits and thereby kills the enemy space ship. And by adding this animation we provide the player with visual feedback that the enemy indeed has been neutralized. On top of the animation we will also provide the player with a auditive feed back to indicate and convey the success of destroying an enemy to the player.
This is to clarify for the player what is happening in the game, as there will be a lot going on on the screen for the player to keep track of.
